Nel 1946 era uscito, pubblicato da \u00c9ditions du Scorpion, un libro di Vernon Sullivan che porta questo titolo. Ritenuto scandaloso, \u00e8 stato poi oggetto di una querela intentata dal <em>Cartel d&#8217;action sociale et morale,<\/em> che riveler\u00e0 che il suo vero autore \u00e8 Boris Vian.  Vian sar\u00e0 condannato a 15 giorni di carcere, subito graziato, per oltraggio alla moralit\u00e0. Pochi giorni prima della sua morte, Fran\u00e7oise gli diede il permesso di scrivere una nuova versione del suo romanzo con lo stesso titolo. Il sapore scandaloso del romanzo e il gusto per i<em> thriller <\/em>americani dell&#8217;epoca ne fecero un successo letterario.
