\nContrairement \u00e0 beaucoup de lectrices et lecteurs bien plus lucides que moi, ce roman, \u00e0 sa sortie, me passe au-dessus de la t\u00eate ; je m\u2019attendais \u00e0 quelque chose d\u2019aussi charmant que Le Satellite de l\u2019Amande<\/i> et suis d\u00e9contenanc\u00e9. Avec ma lenteur d\u2019esprit habituelle<\/i> (pour reprendre une expression que Fran\u00e7oise avait employ\u00e9e avec fausse modestie envers elle-m\u00eame), il m\u2019aura fallu attendre 2022 et cette r\u00e9\u00e9dition par Des Femmes-Antoinette Fouque pour d\u00e9couvrir ce que je consid\u00e8re dor\u00e9navant \u00eatre un v\u00e9ritable chef d\u2019\u0153uvre. Les Berg\u00e8res de l’Apocalypse<\/em> is the main opus in the Losange Trilogy<\/em>, which also includes Le Satellite de l’Amande<\/a><\/em> and Un bonheur viril<\/a><\/em>, as well as various short stories.<\/em> Fran\u00e7oise’s mastery of pictorial depictions of intense scenes is here of a dark intensity that yields nothing to Val\u00e9rie Solanas’ SCUM Manifesto<\/em> or Virginie Despentes’ Baise-moi<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Les Berg\u00e8res<\/em> is one of the 17 titles she published between 1974 and 1979, all the while leading a life of activism punctuated by numerous feats of arms. Written in one go, with little proofreading, she described it as \u201c… modestly, an epic, which I wrote to let off steam… because I’m carrying around masses of fantasies, and I thought it would be good to have a bit of fun\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n

Four years earlier, in 1974, in the throes of an eco-anxiety that was all the less named for the fact that she was practically the only one to experience it, Fran\u00e7oise created the neologism ecofeminism<\/em> and conceptualized its meaning. Despite all her efforts, the term’s reception in France was virtually nil. Moreover, in 1976, the death of Ulrike Meinhoff, found hanged in her cell, caused her heartbreak. Les Berg\u00e8res de l’Apocalypse<\/em> is, I believe, a response to all this. <\/p>\n

In a nutshell, women, rebelling \u201cnot so much for the wrong done to them, but for the wrong done to the planet and to life itself<\/em>\u201d, start an all-out planetary war against men that will lead to their disappearance.<\/p>\n

A sequence in a literary programa<\/a> clearly shows how the book was received at the time. Even if the exchanges are hushed, Fran\u00e7oise’s UFO is frightening in this frigid world that is largely unaware of violence against women, when it is not simply massacred, as the slow worldwide awakening of awareness is showing today. <\/p>\n

To illustrate this hallucinatory saga, we needed nothing less than Mathilde’s great and beautiful voice in one of her most poignant songs. Fran\u00e7oise would have been a fan.
